Nancy Lord: Another Writer Laureate in our midst!
Congratulations to AlaskaWriters member Nancy Lord, of Homer, who has been named Alaska’s newest Writer Laureate by the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Her term will last two years, starting October 1, 2008. She succeeds former State Writer Laureate John Straley. (Member Anne Hanley held the post in 2002-2004.) For details on Nancy’s news, see her website.

Marybeth Holleman:
A
uthor’s site grows with her
work
Pay a visit to the newly much expanded website of AlaskaWriters member Marybeth Holleman, coeditor of Crosscurrents North: Alaskans on the Environment. The site is not only an impressive catalog of MaryBeth’s writings, from books to poems, essays and op-eds—it is also a fine example of how a website can and should grow with an author. (Her site originally focused on the book The Heart of the Sound.)

Speaking of which...
Marybeth Holleman’s most recent book project, Crosscurrents, is a collection of 61 essays and poems in which Alaskans express admiration and awe of the landscape and its wild inhabitants. Contributors span the state and include familiar names: John Haines, Nick Jans, Peggy Shumaker, Nancy Lord, and Richard Nelson. There are also new voices like Mike Burwell and Amy Crawford, and Alaska Native writers, including Joan Kane and Howard Luke.

Crosscurrents reading, Oct. 21
Bill Sherwonit and Marybeth Holleman extend an invite to the last in a series of public readings of the new anthology, Crosscurrents North: Alaskans on the Environment. Contributors Karin Dahl, Joan Kane, Libby Roderick, Buffy McKay and Bill will join one of the book's editors, Marybeth Holleman, to read poems and essay excerpts on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Title Wave Books.

Alaska writing blog offers
‘49 writers, no moose’

Anchorage novelist Andromeda Romano-Lax has created a valuable resource about and for Alaska writers. Her blog, 49 Writers, No Moose, is organized around a simple concept: interview 49 writers from the 49th state. The site offers hours of infectiously interesting reading, and includes Q&A’s with AlaskaWriters members Barbara Brown, Bill Sherwonit, Elise Patkotak and Marybeth Holleman. Another must-read is the interview with Amanda Coyne, who tells why she chose NOT to write the (now-bestselling) Sarah Palin bio.

Bill Sherwonit pens book of essays,
Living With Wildness
: An Alaskan Odyssey
Bill Sherwonit announces the release of his book, Living with Wildness: An Alaskan Odyssey. Bill says: “The book is a collection of essays that explore and reflect upon my own, and our culture’s, relationship with wild nature, from urban centers to remote wilderness, while also considering the wildness we carry within us.” Bill lives in Anchorage and is an AlaskaWriters member. Visit Bill’s website for details and updates. Release dates: Alaska mid-June, nationally in mid-July.

Dear AlaskaWriter,
Welcome to the AlaskaWriters Homestead, a home on the Web for writers from Alaska, and those who share Alaska’s pioneering spirit.

If you want to (ever so occasionally) be informed about upcoming features or updates to the site, sign up for the AlaskaWriters mailing list (above). To say I don’t abuse the privilege would be an understatement. The truth is my missives are rare, though I hope valuable. And, of course, I don’t share or sell my e-mail list.

Enjoy, tell your friends — and keep in touch!

Best,
